Dear Lecturers (English First Additional Language Education, Intermediate Phase)

My name is Clemence Zamokuhle Sabela, I am a Doctoral candidate registered for the programme Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics, in the Department of General Linguistics and Modern Languages, at the University of Zululand.

You are invited to participate in a study which seeks to develop a model to improve the preparation of university student teachers to teach reading in South African schools.

The objectives of the study are to:

  1. Analyse the teaching of reading pedagogy modules for student teachers in South African universities.
  2. Explore the lecturers’ perceptions on the teaching of reading pedagogy modules to student teachers in their universities.
  3. Determine how student teachers teach reading in schools during the teaching practice period.

Research participant criteria:
Lectures at South African universities teaching English First Additional Language Education module to student teachers in the Intermediate Phase, Bachelor of Education Programme.

Study Procedure
If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to participate in an online semi-structured interview, which will last approximately 1hour.

Participation in the study is voluntary, and your answers will be kept confidential and used solely for research purposes.

This study has been granted approval by the University of KwaZulu-Natal and ethical clearance by the University of Zululand, certificate number: UZ-REC 0691-008 PGD 2024/24.
