An investigation of career choice and change among health professionals in South Africa

Dear (Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychology, Nursing, Nutrition/dietetics) Students,

My name is Modupe Busisiwe Makwarela, and I am a Doctoral candidate registered for the programme Doctor of Philosophy in Health Sciences (Health Professions Education) at the North West University.

You are invited to participate in a study which seeks to understand how career choice and career change decisions are made among health professionals in South Africa. This will help in the training of future health professionals in South Africa.

The research aims to:
1. Describe the nature and factors influencing career choice and career change decisions among health professions students and professionals in South Africa.

  1. Make recommendations that will help to promote informed career choice decisions for future health professionals, influence health professions training institutions in South Africa and mitigate the negative impact of career change decisions to promote resilience and longevity in health professions practice.

Research participant criteria:
All students (males and females of all races) currently enrolled to study Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Nutrition/Dietetics or Psychology.

Study Procedure

If you agree to participate in this study, you will be asked to:
1. Complete an anonymous online survey that will take approximately 10 minutes.
2. Participate in a follow-up online semi-structured interview via Microsoft Teams, which will last approximately 45minutes. Please email the researcher at 43939724@mynwu.ac.za to receive a meeting link.

Participation is voluntary, and your answers will be kept confidential and used solely for research purposes.

This study has been granted external ethical review and approval by the UKZN Director Governance and Administration (Office of the Registrar) and NWU Health Research Ethics Committee (NWU-HREC) - Ethics reference numbers: NWU-00042-24-A1

Anybody can access the notice system, however you will not be able to place notices from off-campus.
