Suicidality and suicide thoughts

 Date: Thursday 28 September 2023 at 13:30

Suicide, taking your own life, is a tragic reaction to stressful life situations and is all the more tragic because suicide can be prevented.  Whether you have considered suicide, know someone who feels suicidal, or have lost someone from suicide, learn suicide warning signs and how to reach out for immediate help, learn to deal with a loss by suicide and about what professionals say.  Join me for this very sensitive, intimate talk about our innermost thoughts and experiences of suicidality.

Facilitator/s:  Mrs Claire Ngcobo-Email: ngcoboc2@ukzn.ac.za for more information

PhD and Masters Support Groups

Join the College of Law and Management Studies Masters and Ph.D. support groups! The support groups aim to provide a safe and confidential space. In the sessions, you will share your experiences and concerns about being a Postgraduate student, listen to other students, and receive support. The group will be an excellent space to share skills and strategies to enhance well-being and academic success. Hopefully, sharing common experiences and fears, challenges, and successes with other postgraduate students will give you a feeling of ‘I’m not alone in this!’. Also, understanding what others are doing to cope with their issues can inspire you.

Developing a Growth mindset

Dates:  Wednesday 27 September                                                           Time: 10h00

Do you believe that you were born and raised with a fixed set of skills and abilities - such as your IQ - that you had from birth and will stay with you your entire life? Or do you believe that your ideas and beliefs are changing, that you can learn new skills if you work at them, and that your wisdom and intelligence grow with each new experience?

If you said “yes” to the first question, you have what is called a “fixed mindset.” If one has a “fixed mindset,” it can be problematic because one’s fear of making mistakes can lead one to avoid opportunities that would help one grow, improve oneself in important ways, do well academically, and create the life one desires.

If you said “yes” to the second question, you probably have what Stanford professor Carol Dweck calls a “growth mindset”. If one has a “growth mindset,” one usually enjoys challenges despite the risk because one values learning and growth.

So, if you currently have more of a fixed mindset- do not worry —you can develop a growth mindset! Developing a growth mindset will teach you to embrace failure and find new ways of succeeding.

Attend this workshop and achieve your academic potential!
