The Centre for Jazz
and Popular Music proudly presents Pat Zondi and the Mpolompolo Band on
Wednesday, 13 September 2023 at 17:30.
Heritage
Month is here with us again, and this year, the Centre for Jazz and Popular
Music celebrates the month with an exciting lineup of South Africa’s finest
musicians and performers. On Wednesday 13 September, Pat Zondi and the
Mpolompolo Band, will dazzle us with a fusion of Afro-pop and traditional
maskandi styles with a touch of jazzy vibes. His repertoire mainly comprises
original compositions and will include covers of old-time township jazz and
mbhaqanga hits on the night.
Pat
started his creative career writing and reciting poetry in community groups in
the late 1980s and, by 1992, gained admission to an Audio Producers Course at
the then University of Natal in Durban. He recorded his first album titled
‘Buya,’ followed by ‘Nondaba’ in 2006, and in 2010, he released ‘Isimanga
sothando.’
Performing
with Pat on the night will be members of the Mpolompolo Band, which is made up
of Nhlanhla Zondi (of Abahambayo) on acoustic guitar and vocals, Malusi Ndlovu
(founder and leader of an arts and development organization ‘Vusani Isizwe
Mawundlu’ based in Ntuzuma) on djembe, conga and vocals, Bheki Khalala (who has
toured with Mfiliseni Magubane, Busi Mhlongo and Maqhinga Hadebe) on acoustic
guitar, with Pat himself on accordion and lead vocals.
Pat
and the band promise an exciting evening of Afro-fusion and a dash of nostalgia
as they send us back to our heritage to relive some of the most beautiful
sounds that have shaped our musical soundscape.
