This seminar is a focus on Ranjita Mohanty’s new book entitled Democratising Development: Struggles for Rights and Social Justice in India. The book examines development through the lens of the most marginalized. It contains empirically drawn cases and supplements these with theoretical and analytical arguments. It contributes to contemporary debates on democracy, social justice, civil society, social mobilization, social inclusion, redistribution and participatory governance.

Speaker Bios:

Ranjita Mohanty is a social scientist and activist based in New Delhi, India. Her research areas include development, social policy, social mobilisation and governance. 

Ilya Matveev is based at St Petersburg in Russia. He is an assistant professor at RANEPA and has been active in the labour movement and various social struggles in Russia. His research interests include public policy, Russian politics and theories of the state.

Brian Meir is a writer and activist from Sao Paulo, Brazil. He is editor of Brasil Wire, coordinator of the new publication "Year of Lead: Washington, Wall Street and the return of Fascism to Brazil", and correspondent for TeleSur English.
