The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly presents the Jazz
recitals featuring guitarist Josh Swanson (Bmus), and vocalist Josie Matabola (Diploma
in Jazz and Popular music) on Thursday 15 November 2018 at 18:00.
Josh is a versatile musician and performs weekly at different
events for a wide variety of audiences. He has enjoyed playing for larger
audiences at venues such as the Botanical Gardens, Makaranga Garden Lodge and
the Nelson Mandela Capture site, and has had numerous experiences playing in
more intimate settings where he thrives on his connection with the audience. A
highlight of his time at UKZN has been attending the Standard Bank Jazz
Festival. Josh also composes, drawing on his life experiences and his love of
nature for inspiration.
Josh will be joined by Musicians Juran Sibanda-Clarke on Drums,
Giyani Shangase on bass and Jaedon
Daniel on piano. Expect to hear songs
like Days of wine and Roses, Have you met Miss Jones and Donna-Lee.
Blooming
artist Josie Matabola is a deep-rooted rising jazz vocalist from Pretoria, with
an alternatively defined sound to her music. She acquired her expertise at MC
Art at The South African State Theatre and later moved to Vusi Mahlasela Music Academy,
she is currently studying Jazz at the University of KwaZulu Natal.
Currently
looking to break barriers and advance her brand, she is working on building a
reputable image through her music and possessing a number of tracks to her name,
that she anticipates to serve to the public. Her band is a quintet consisting
of a bass player, drummer, pianist, saxophone and her being the vocalist.
Josie
is carrying out her music just as she has always wanted as it is a culmination
of where she's been and where she's going, and one that is sure going to win
her notoriety that is demanded by the depth and quality of her songs.

Freeman Gumede (Bass), Boy Mokgatla (Drums), Mxolisi Mdlalose (Alto Saxophone )
