Black Skin White Masks by Frantz Fanon
CRITICAL TIMES,
CRITICAL RACE
Research Project . . . we investigate key questions in the study of race (as materiality) and
racism as acts, events, moments, in the lives of South Africans.
This Wednesday, we are watching
snippets from Isaac Julian’s documentary on Frantz Fanon’s first text, Black Skin White Masks.
Come and join us.
Meet a select group of scholars who will offer their reflections on Black Skin, White Masks.
Frantz Fanon was born in Martinique, an island
in the Caribbean that was colonized by the French. He trained as a medical doctor, joined the
Algerian Liberation Army, turned to psychoanalysis and participated in the
struggle for liberation against the French colonisers. The film offers
historical input of the time period in the late 1950s and also showcases the scholarly
work of intellectuals such as the late Stuart Hall, and others.
