Death of Professor Emeritus Jeff Guy
Print

It is with enormous sadness that we, members of the discipline of History at UKZN, note the sudden death, in London, of our colleague Professor Emeritus Jeff Guy, on 15 December.

Tributes to this magnificent scholar, leading intellectual, stimulating teacher, inspirational colleague, and academic activist, are pouring in from across the world.

One such is at

As yet, we anticipate that a gathering in Jeff's honour will be held in Durban in early 2015, but the details are yet to be finalised.

Our condolences to Jeff's family and to his very many friends, colleagues, and comrades.

This loss to the History profession and to South African scholarship is immense, but the legacy of fearless intellectual honesty and rigour he has left will continue to invigorate the democratic South Africa for which he sacrificed much. We are privileged to have had Jeff spend the last two decades in the country, and region, he cared so deeply about.
