The KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH) is a ground breaking collaboration between the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Our mission is to conduct outstanding basic science research on tuberculosis (TB) and HIV, translate the scientific findings into new tools to control TB and HIV, and expand the educational opportunities in the region. K-RITH is an independent research institute that will work in collaboration with UKZN and other academic and clinical institutions in South Africa and around the world.

Brief overview of the position:

The successful candidate will support the functions and duties of the K-RITH Level 4 PI’s, managing their diaries; offices in the laboratory and providing a channel of communication between the PI’s and staff, students, external partners and members of the public. He/she will provide administrative and logistical support to laboratory orientated projects and support groups at K-RITH. The successful candidate will be expected to work long hours as and when required.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. BSc in a science discipline

2. Administrative qualification

3. High level of computer literacy with proficiency specifically in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email and web-based forms

Minimum Experience:

1. Well developed oral and written communication skills

2. 3 years relevant experience in a similar position

Preferred additional requirements and qualities

1. BSc Hons or MSc in a science discipline

2. Laboratory experience

3. Must possess a valid South African Code B Driver’s License

4. Must be willing to work beyond hours, 8am – 16h30 daily, with a 1 hr lunch break to meet seasonal laboratory demands up to a maximum of 45 hours per week

5. Interest in science administration

6. Willingness to participate in training programmes, administrative and/or science

Remuneration:

The remuneration package for this position is market related and will depend on the qualifications, experience, responsibility and previous earnings of the successful candidate.
