About the Initiative

African Initiative III forms part of the Horizon Europe Work Programme 2025, with over €500 million allocated across 24 topics to strengthen research and innovation collaboration between African and European institutions. The initiative contributes to the AU–EU Innovation Agenda, supporting sustainable development and stronger R&I ecosystems across Africa.

Funding is structured around key pillars:

  • Green Transition (€241 million)
  • Innovation & Technology (€186.5 million)
  • Public Health (€50 million)
  • Capacity for Science (€3.5 million)
  • Cross-cutting Issues (€19.5 million)

Presenters

  • Professor Kirk Semple, Director of International Engagement, Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University. A leading expert in environmental microbiology with over 30 years of experience, Professor Semple has extensive involvement in international partnerships across Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Professor Akan Odon, Director of Partnerships, Lancaster University. An international business and strategy specialist, Professor Odon has facilitated over 100 UK–Africa partnerships and secured more than £40 million in international funding.
