The Discipline of Music in the School of Arts offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in four major streams: African Music and Dance, Jazz and Popular Music, Opera Studies and Western Classical Music. All modules involve practical components.
We invite applications for a contract Lecturer position on the Howard College campus to teach in Semester 1, 2026 (February – June 2026). The successful candidate will be a jazz instrumentalist (excluding a pianist or vocalist) and will be responsible for teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, primarily in, but not limited to, the Jazz and Popular Music stream. They would also be expected to undertake consultations with students and contribute to the administrative tasks within the Discipline. All teaching will be done face-to-face.
Minimum Requirements:
· A Master’s degree in Music
· At least 2 years of successful teaching experience in the theory and practice of Jazz and Popular Music.
· The candidate should be able to demonstrate a strong knowledge of Jazz and Popular Music, as well as practical skills in Jazz Performance, Improvisation, and Composition and Arranging.

REMUNERATION: The remuneration package offered will be dependent on the qualifications of the successful applicant, in line with UKZN remuneration for an ad hoc lecturer level. Rates of pay will be per the University fixed-term rates and official module (Handbook) approved hours for these academic duties.
