Engineering Academic staff perception towards students’ use of Gen AI & staff aligned teaching and assessment strategies
Greeting: Engineering Academic.
My name is Dr Godfrey Marumure,
a Principal Academic Development Officer, from CASSE, College of
Agriculture, Engineering & Science (CAES), University of
KwaZulu-Natal.
You are being invited to consider participating in a study that involves
Engineering Academic staff perception towards students’ use of
Generative Artificial Intelligence: Implication on teaching and
assessment. The study aims to explore academic staff perception
towards students use of GenAI tools in their academic activities and
how the staff respond to maintain teaching and assessment integrity of
their courses.
The study participants to respond to self-administered online questionnaire with varied items for approximately 15-20 minutes. The study is part of College of Agriculture, Engineering & Science Teaching and Learning researches.
The
study does not involve any risks or discomforts. The students' use of
Generative AI tools in engineering at UKZN is not documented, including
the academic staff's perception towards their use. The expectation is
for academic staff to adjust their teaching and assessment to remain
relevant and maintain the academic integrity of the BScEng degree. The
study provides academics the opportunity to share their practices in
responding to students' use of GenAI tools as the research results shall be made available to the school.
This
study has been ethically reviewed and approved by the UKZN Humanities
and Social Sciences Research Ethics Committee (approval number HSSREC/00008820/2025).
