AD HOC LECTURERS: PDIR PROGRAM - HOWARD COLLEGE CAMPUS
(FIRST and SECOND SEMESTER: 2026)
The Centre for Extended Legal Studies (CELS unit) in the School of Law, UKZN, offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Industrial Relations (PDIR). This qualification offers an NQF level 8 qualification and is endorsed by the Labour Relations Industry, which comprises the Bargaining Councils and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). It equips students with labour dispute resolution skills and serves as an advantage should they wish to become Bargaining Council Panellists or CCMA Commissioners.
The CELS unit seeks to appoint ad hoc lecturers to teach all or part of the following modules:
1. MODULE 1: Contemporary Issues in Labour Law – semester 1;
2. MODULE 2: Individual Labour Law – semester 1;
3. MODULE 3: Collective Employment Law – semester 1;
4. MODULE 4: Principles of Legal Practice – semester 1;
5. MODULE 5: Management of Conflict; semester 2;
6. MODULE 6: Labour Dispute Resolution – semester 2;
7. MODULE 7: Procedural Labour Law A – semester 2;
8. MODULE 8: Procedural Labour Law B – semester 2.
Teaching will include the preparation and delivery of lectures for the sections assigned (TBC), the setting and marking of all related assessments, online practicals, consultation with students, and associated administrative tasks. Lectures will be delivered online and lecturers will be required to make use of Zoom, as well as the university’s online learning platform (Moodle/Learn2026). Lectures will take place outside normal working hours (usually on weekday evenings 17h30-20h00 and some Saturday mornings).
The incumbents will report to the Director: CELS on the Howard College Campus, but will be required to work in close consultation with the PDIR Programme Manager.
Minimum Requirements:
• A South African undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline, depending on the module(s) concerned;
• A relevant Master’s degree;
• At least two years’ relevant teaching experience at university level.
Relevant work experience in legal, human resources, or other labour-related practice, as well as some experience with online teaching modalities (LEARN, online assessments, and Zoom consultations) will be advantageous.
All candidates should demonstrate effective communication skills, and if invited to an interview, will be required to make a 10-minute MS PowerPoint presentation on a topic TBA.
Incumbents who are permanent UKZN staff members will need to comply with the University’s policy on private remunerative work.
