The Centre for Jazz and
Popular Music at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) is excited to present
Cape Town-based vocalist and songwriter Maya Spector in a special performance
on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 17:30. This highly anticipated event will
showcase Maya’s rich vocal talent and diverse musical background, blending
jazz, soul, and more.
Maya Spector, a graduate of
UKZN (2009) with a major in jazz performance and music education, has built a
remarkable career spanning over two decades. Her voice, often described as
"pure honey" with a depth that evokes both darkness and sweetness,
draws listeners into her world of storytelling.
A global citizen at heart,
Maya’s musical journey has taken her across the world, beginning with her first
professional performance at the prestigious Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
alongside renowned figures like Jim Henson and Phylicia Rashad. Since then, she
has written and recorded her jazz/soul fusion album Honey & Heartache,
released over 20 singles in a variety of genres including jazz, EDM, soul, and
rock, and collaborated on numerous films, jingles, and projects. Maya’s
performances have brought her to stages across the globe, and she continues to
captivate audiences with her diverse musical range.
In addition to her music
career, Maya furthered her education during the 2020 lockdown, receiving a full
scholarship for a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Practice Management from
Henley Business School Africa. Maya is also the founder of The Papaya House, a
collaborative female empowerment cultural production house.
Whether performing
