The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is thrilled to announce a captivating performance by renowned South African pianist and composer Keenan Meyer on Tuesday, 22 October 2024. Meyer will showcase selections from his new work ‘Reawakening’ alongside pieces from his debut album, ‘The Alchemy of Living’ and notable repertoire from the South African jazz archive.

 

This concert, titled ‘The Art of Pianism’ delves into the rich tapestry of African pianism, emphasizing themes of reclamation, ancestral recall, and the transformative power of music in accessing cultural universals for personal ascension. The performance invites audiences to embark on a journey of deeper awareness, empathy, and connection.

 

Keenan Meyer’s musical journey began in Johannesburg, where his innate rhythmic sense and melodic ear ignited a lifelong passion for music. Since starting piano lessons in 2007, he has emerged as a key figure in the South African jazz scene. Beyond his performance and composition skills, Meyer is deeply committed to teaching and mentoring emerging musicians, nurturing the next generation of artistic talent.

 

This concert is part of the Twosday concert series, a monthly event curated by the Jazz Centre, complementing our successful Trios series held every Wednesday.
