The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to announce the return of live music for this semester with a special performance by legendary saxophonist McCoy Mrubata on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at 17:30. With a career spanning over 40 years, Mrubata promises to bring a wealth of experience to an exciting performance with his band on the evening.

Born in 1959 in Langa township, Mrubata's early life was immersed in the rich sounds of African music, from Zion Church hymns to traditional healers' chants and the vibrant jive of the Merry Macs band. His informal training under Langa greats like Madoda Gxabeka and Winston Ngozi laid the foundation for his future success. His professional journey began in the 1980s, playing in cover bands like Fever and Airborne before joining Louis and the Jive. His big break came in 1987 when Sipho Hotstix Mabuse spotted him, leading to a recording deal with Zomba Records and the release of his debut album, Firebird, in 1988.

Throughout his illustrious career, Mrubata has collaborated with many talented musicians, including Hugh Masekela, Vusi Khumalo, and Paul Hanmer. He has released numerous critically acclaimed albums, winning several South African Music Awards (SAMAs) and a Kennedy Center Gold Medal Award. His contributions extend beyond music into drama productions, creating scores for plays and touring with Norwegian productions. He has also conducted workshops and masterclasses, solidifying his status as a mentor and educator.

During the concert, Mrubata will share new material from his latest album, Lullaby for Khayoyo, alongside some of his well-known and popular songs such as "Icamagu Livumile," "Mr and Mrs Adonis," and "Cape Samba." The performance will take the audience on a personal musical journey, telling his story and reminding them of his roots through the power of music. The event promises to be an unforgettable experience. "I will be performing with an exceptional band led by Andile Yenana, one of South Africa’s leading pianists and a renowned educator. The talented band members include Ntokozo Nsibande on trumpet, Thuto Mosemme on double bass, and Sbu Ncube on drums," said Mrubata. Don't miss this rare opportunity to experience the magic of McCoy Mrubata live at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.
