The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is pleased to present the
talented Ntuthuko Ndebele, widely known as Mthuthu, live in concert dubbed “Indumiso
YabeNguni” for Aprils edition of “Twosday” on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
Born in Ulundi and deeply rooted in his African culture, Mthuthu's
musical journey has been remarkable. From honing his talent at Mahlabatini
Primary School to collaborating with renowned DJs and musicians, Mthuthu has
carved a niche for himself in the music industry. Mthuthu's music transcends
boundaries, as it fuses elements of African indigenous music and House Music
while exploring themes of spirituality and cultural identity. His EP 'INdumba,'
released in 2022, which featured Dr Madala Kunene, garnered critical acclaim
for its evocative melodies and thought-provoking lyrics. His latest EP, "Indumiso
Yabenguni", has also received rave reviews since its release.
In addition to his musical prowess,
Mthuthu is a passionate advocate for local talent, mentoring aspiring artists
and championing his rich Zulu cultural heritage. His commitment to social
justice and healing is reflected in his music, which communicates unity and
fairness through storytelling.
Joining him on set for the evening
will be Njabulo on percussion, Pianola on piano and Jay on the bass.
Expect an immersive experience that
highlights Mthuthu's unique fusion of ancient Zulu chants, rhythms, and soulful
vocals for this Months edition of “Twosday”
“Twosday” is an exciting music concept that features a
collaboration between musicians who are fairly well-established in their own
particular area/discipline/style of music. The idea is to encourage
experimentation, teaching, learning and ultimately new work outside of the
stylistic parameters within which the musicians normally work so comfortably.
While Twosday suggests the collaboration between two musicians, it also refers
to the meeting of two musical styles and the performance itself may include
more musicians if so desired. The performance may also take the form of a
lecture-demonstration where the audience is free to make comments and ask
questions.
The aim of the exercise is to create an environment that fosters a
cross-cultural ethos that is closer to the edge of the musicians’ normal performance
and composition experience. Given the fabulous array of phenomenally talented
and trained musicians that represent the rich cultural diversity that exists in
Durban, it is our hope to establish ‘Twosday’ as an on-going concert series, as
we have done so successfully with our Trios series every Wednesday. Essentially
it is an opportunity to learn, to stretch creatively and to communicate a
shared musicianship.
The concept was first launched in 2011 at Centre for Jazz and
Popular Music and was paused during covid.
