Investigating the challenges of the University of KwaZulu-Natal attracting professional services staff
Attracting professional staff remains one of the most pressing issues confronting tertiary institutions globally, significantly higher education institutions. This study examines the University's issues in attracting and maintaining professional staff and the effectiveness of the techniques used to address those challenges. Most higher education institutions in South Africa distinguish themselves through their research thrusts and compete for human capital that may assist in fulfilling the research agenda and provide the institution with a competitive advantage. Although most research on professional staff management has been undertaken in organisations other than higher education institutions, the issues remain the same, with the added challenges of limited resources and rising student numbers in higher education.
The study focuses on the challenges of attracting professional staff to a selected higher education institution. The tertiary institution's difficulties in attracting high-calibre professional staff and recruiting talented professionals motivate the study. These obstacles frequently affect an institution's ability to fulfil its mission and vision, compete with other institutions, and sometimes with other employment sectors.
