TEACHING AND LEARNING COMMUNIQUÉ: ONLINE LEARNING RESOURCES: UKZN TEACH ONLINE PORTAL
Print
Dear Staff
The Teach Online Portal is intended to be an evolving ‘agnostic communal facility’ where colleagues share their online resources with the University community. The content is curated by the University Teaching and Learning Office (UTLO) and the Teaching and Learning leadership.
To access the Online Portal, go to the UTLO homepage via Google Chrome http://utlo.ukzn.ac.za  and click on TEACH ONLINE PORTAL or view the video to access the Teach Online Portal: https://youtu.be/ACFIq3rKPJA
The UKZN Teach Online Portal (UTOP), is an information hub to accommodate an evolving teaching online tool kit and associated resources: http://utlo.ukzn.ac.za/utop including the following:
  • Moodle is a learning platform designed to provide educators, administrators and learners with a single robust, secure and integrated system to create personalised learning environments: http://utlo.ukzn.ac.za/utop/Moodle
  • Kaltura is integrated with Moodle, thereby enhancing the video capability of our LMS. You can upload existing video files on Moodle without files size restriction, however, it is highly recommended that you compress your video recordings using the handbreak or VLC application. Another significant feature of Kaltura is the Express Capture and Kaltura Capture that allows you to record your screen with a voiceover. Now you can capture not only your presentation slides but the interface and workflow of any application on your laptop. All media uploaded with the Kaltura activity on Moodle will be automatically transcoded for adaptive playback: http://utlo.ukzn.ac.za/utop/Kaltura
  • UKZN’s Technology Enhanced Learning (UTEL) is back in operation as an essential service. UTEL provides a suite of technology-rich teaching and learning solutions and innovative pedagogies, including digitization of lecture capture, e-learning, blended learning, and the flipped classroom. UTEL has been enabled by the revitalization of UKZN’s television and sound studios, which are reputed to be amongst the finest in the country: https://utel.ukzn.ac.za/
UTEL is available to support you to prepare for online teaching. This will enable you to deliver content remotely to students.
For assistance with the production of digital content through the various stages, please contact: UTEL Project Manager on x2643 or cecil@ukzn.ac.za
  • UKZN Teach Online Forum is a digital community which enables us to discuss teaching online at UKZN. In this open community we are free to start a new discussion, contribute to an existing discussion and assist others by sharing experiences of what works and what does not work: https://dmssupport.ukzn.ac.za/utlo/UTOF
We invite academics and professional staff to contribute to the development of the PORTAL by sharing teaching and learning resources. Please send contributions to utlo@ukzn.ac.za
Finally, in order to satisfy our appetite for responsive teaching innovation, we urge you to write to us at utlo@ukzn.ac.za to:
  • Advise us of your training and development needs
  • Offer your expertise and services to expand the suite of training opportunities
