WRITING PLACE STUDENT ASSISTANTS

3 MONTH APPOINTMENT

TEACHING AND LEARNING UNIT

WESTVILLE, HOWARD COLLEGE AND PIETERMARITZBURG CAMPUSES

The College of Law and Management Studies seeks to appoint student assistants at the Writing Place (WP) on all three campuses for 2019. The WP assists students to develop their academic writing skills. The successful incumbents will report directly to the WP Coordinator. The Teaching and Learning Unit invites all interested MA and PhD students, who meet the criteria below, to apply for positions as a student assistant.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

·    Registered for a Masters or PhD degree at UKZN in 2019 (an Honours degree in English, Language Education, Applied Language Studies, Commerce or a four year qualification in a relevant field would be an advantage)

·         An excellent academic record

·         Traceable experience in student tutoring

·         Good understanding of academic literacy issues in the South African context

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·         Availability to devote ten (10) hours per week to tutoring

·     Assist students, in individual and group peer tutoring sessions, with academic writing skills (essay-writing, structuring of arguments, researching, referencing, etc.)

·         Develop content for and facilitate academic writing workshops

·         Promote the use of and advertise the interventions offered at the Writing Place

·         Produce reports regarding Writing Place interventions and assist with research tasks
