Agricultural Economics Job Shadowing Programme
Print

UKZN's Agricultural Economics Student Society, in partnership with the Agribusiness Development Agency in Pietermaritzburg, is coordinating a job shadowing programme from 17-21 September 2018 for 6 successful applicants (from UKZN) who will work in the ADA's 3 units: Livestock, Sugarcane and Forestry, and Grains and Essential Oils.

The opportunity

Job shadowing is a structured career activity where a student follows an employee in the company to learn about a particular occupation and industry. The job shadowing program is a voluntary program designed to provide students, especially disadvantaged (lowincome, first generation going to university) students interested in agriculture economics careers with a rare and unique opportunity to explore a variety of agricultural economist specialist fields. Most university students have little to no experience of the everyday tasks associated with an agricultural economics-related profession, and yet they are expected to make career choices through their course selections and research focus. By interacting closely with experienced professionals for a week, the student will expand their knowledge of career options and gain experience in the first steps of networking. Your day at ADA may include sitting in on meetings, facility tours, observing daily work, informational interviews, meeting key department heads and learning the mission of the departments they oversee, learning about how their careers began and gaining hands-on experience.
