AHRI Social Sciences Masters Fellowship opportunity

Africa Health Research Institute (AHRI) is a leading South African medical research organization on the east coast of South Africa. We have three campuses in the province of KwaZulu-Natal.  The Durban research campus with the administrative headquarters and an advanced laboratory complex is on the Nelson R Mandela Medical grounds of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  200km North of Durban we have our Mtubatuba residential campus which has 20 flats and rooms for visiting researchers and support staff and our Somkhele Research Campus where most of our clinical and population health research is conducted in collaboration with the Department of Health and other national and international research bodies.

AHRI’s principal funding comes from the Howard Hughes Medical Research Institute and the Wellcome Trust. AHRI is one of several Wellcome Programmes in Africa and Asia.  In addition to these two principal funders we have many AHRI scientist-led research grants from major funders of research such as the Gates Foundation, NIH, MRC (UK), MRC (SA), Max Planck Institute and others.   Our academic partners are the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University College London.

AHRI’s Social Science and Research Ethics Department is looking for a Masters Student to work on an independently directed research project related to our Multi-Morbidity study.

The Multi-Morbidity study aims to describe the care provided to people living with HIV and other long-term conditions (such as diabetes and high blood pressure) in the Hlabisa sub-district area, and to describe the perceptions and experiences of patients and health care workers. The results of this study will contribute to preparing for future large-scale delivery and evaluation of improved care models.

AHRI’s Social Science and Research Ethics Department has a multidisciplinary approach to research including qualitative, quantitative and participatory visual methods.

In the context of this Masters Fellowship, strong knowledge and experience in qualitative methods will be essential. Ability to work independently, strong skills in social science methods and interest in multi-morbidity are essential. The successful candidate will be based in our Somkhele Site.
