CLASSICS RESEARCH COLLOQUIUM
DATE: Thursday, 15 March 2018
TIME: 14:10 - 15:45
VENUE: Committee Room, Classics Department, Room GO 12A, Ground Floor, MTB, Howard College Campus
SPEAKER: Professor Bernhard Kytzler (Foreign Languages, UKZN)
TOPIC: Kitsch from the Classics
ABSTRACT: Although the concept of kitsch is a modern phenomenon which originated in the 19th century in Germany, one can find some similarities already in the works of the ancient Greek and Roman authors. The paper intents to present some characteristic examples from the Greek novel, the Anthologia Graeca and Latin Epic Poetry to show that contemporary concepts and theories can be applied profitably to the texts of classical authors as well for a better appreciation of these classical genres.
