Applications are invited from postgraduate students with appropriate qualifications and experience for the appointment to the post of:
Academic Development Officer: Part-time contract post from 01 April 2018 up to and including 31 December 2018. This post would suit a postgraduate student who is completing a Masters or Doctoral Degree.
Minimum qualifications and experience
- A completed Honours or equivalent degree.
- Previous appropriate experience in formal tutoring and academic development in a tertiary institution.
- A good academic record.
- Ability to communicate concepts in any of the Arts, Humanities or Social Science disciplines clearly.
Duties
- Assist the School in developing responses to the needs of at risk students, coordinate this response and assist in implementation.
- Offer curriculum advice to students.
- Knowledge of the School’s generic and structured degrees, majors, core modules, electives, pre-requisites and credits required.
- Knowledge of the Academic Monitoring and Exclusions Policy of the University.
- Knowledge of the progression rules of the University and the College.
- Consult with “at risk” students, and give guidance to the School as to the challenges and issues commonly faced by these students.
- Monitor students as early as the first assessment for DP purposes.
- Run test and assignment preparation workshops, under guidance from the lecturer concerned, as required.
- Liaise with AMS coordinator to identify mentors allocated to students.
- Refer students with psychosocial, health, financial and other issues to the appropriate student support services.
- Discuss student performance on assignments and tests with the lecturer concerned, and consider possible interventions.
- Keep records and statistics of student consultations.
- Write reports for the relevant School committees.
- Assist the School with, orientation, registration and information sessions.
- Present educational research papers reports at relevant local teaching and learning conferences and research days.
Remuneration: R10,000.00 per month
