The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music proudly hosts Mozambican-born USA based guitarist Albino Mbie on Wednesday 21 February 2018 at 18:00.

Berklee College of Music graduate, Albino Mbie, is a Mozambican multi award-winning guitarist, vocalist and music producer that built his first guitar from a five litre can of oil, scrap wood, and electric cords at the tender age of 16. Drawn to the street music of Maputo, Mbie soon started playing with bands in the local scene. For his first time at on a South African tour, Mbie brings a band of fellow Berklee graduates to present his music to South African audiences as well as well-loved Cape Town based drummer Frank Paco.

Mbie makes music that aims to combine disparate entities into an organic whole while retaining their unique, undiluted flavours. The music of his native Mozambique coupled with his experiences living in the US, and traveling many other places in the world, overlap pleasingly to treat the audience’s ear to an original sound of Afro-pop meets Moz-Jazz. Imbued with a worldly energy, Mbie’s incredibly approachable music exudes sophistication and simplicity.

Join Albino Mbie (guitar and vocal) with his band Jiri Nedoma (piano), Guy Bernfeld (bass), Frank Paco (drums) at Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM), University of Kwazulu Natal, Howard College Wednesday 21 February 2018 at 18:00.
