The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to present the Rites, Rights and Riots by Neil Gonsalves on Wednesday 26 October 2016 at 18:00.

Pianist and composer, Neil Gonsalves presents excerpts from two open-ended song cycles, ‘F(r)ee Fall’ and ‘Scenes from a Wedding’.

‘F(r)ee Fall’ comprises a collection of pieces that were composed over a 10-year span, a musician’s diary, of the order, disorder and reorder of things in academic and other confined spaces.

‘Scenes from a Wedding’ is inspired by a series of family weddings and the celebrations and busy preparations that accompany them. This ritual of communion, which in this instance included a six-week expedition of North America, is set against the backdrop of Trump’s wall, BREXIT, gun violence in the US, #Blacklivesmatter, and Elon Musk’s self-driving cars and mission to realise human life on Mars.

The performance will take the form of three short sets, each featuring a different combination of drummers, Bruce Baker, Riley Giandhari and Jude Kenrick, and guitarist, Ethan Naidoo, trumpeter, Siyanda Zulu, saxophonist Phumlani Mtiti, Mokgethisi Nkotsi on trombone and vocalist, Xolisa Dlamini.

Gonsalves is a versatile musician who has performance and recording credits with local and international luminaries mainly in the areas of Jazz, ‘world-beat/fusion’ and popular music.

In addition to these performances, Mr Gonsalves has recorded and released three recordings of his own, ‘Tonk’(2000), North Facing(2007) and Latinfluence(2013). North Facing was recorded in Gothenburg, Sweden as part of an exchange program that existed between the music departments at UKZN and Goteborg University. More recently Mr Gonsalves has formed a duo with his colleague, Flamenco guitar maestro, Demi Fernandez.  The duo has performed locally and recent collaborations include the Linda Vargas flamenco Dance Company and internationally revered Puerto Rican master percussionist, Efrain Toro. Cd’s will be available on the night.
