CCS Seminar: Alternative Development or Alternative to Development?
Print

The Centre for Civil Society based within the School of Built Environment and Development Studies invites you to the seminar Alternative Development or Alternative to Development? by Stefano Battain and Daniela Biocca.

Date: Friday 27 November 2015
Time: 12h30 - 14h00
Venue: CCS Seminar Room 602, 6th Floor, MTB Tower, Howard College, University of KwaZulu-Natal

Topic:
The question of an 'alternative to development' is answered in part through learning from global struggles for land, water, seeds and women's rights. Twenty countries are the case sites, with comparative research addressing similar problems in different settings, with contrasting strategies and tactics. As the project's data collection phase draws to a close, the researchers ask, "What next?"

Speakers:
Stefano Battain has a masters in Poverty Reduction and Development Management from Birmingham (UK) and Daniela Biocca has a masters in International Relations from Perugia (Italy). After spending six years in Tanzania and South Sudan as international NGO development workers, and after experiencing successes and (many) failures, they are on a world tour seeking information on civil society resistance to dysfunctional democracies and overexploitation of natural resources.
