WRITING WORKSHOP -- THE BODY AS TEXT

 The Body as Text

In this workshop we go through a process of naming -- writing down each and every part of our body (each participant makes her/his list) and we work through our lists by addressing the absence of presence, presence of absence, shifting dominant paradigms, placing the subject in the centre of the conceptual process, etcetera. Many postgraduates go through the rigorous process of reading texts, having to retrieve information, and having to write about what they have read and often feel at a loss to capture their reading and/or analysis of their reading.  When words are necessary on the page to depict, describe, analyse, engrave, examine, sum up, critically engage .  .  . researchers often express exhaustion at a process that demands so much . . .  many say that words have failed them. But have you failed words?  Have you failed to capture the essence of what you want to say but cannot say. This workshop allows you to refer to a text -- your body -- which you are meant to know better than another text. By using the body as text, your own body, the process of referral and retrieval assists with thinking through what you think you know, and what you have not observed, have not captured in your imagination and as such have not captured in words.  It helps you think through the functioning of words and the functioning of language as speech, the imagination and writing.
