Hit comedy ‘B!*ch Stole My Doek’ heads for Pmb!

Hailed as a “One-woman comedy riot... One of 2014’s top shows” (Estelle Sinkins, The Witness), playwright Clinton Marius’s hit comedy B!*ch Stole My Doek starring Shona Johnson is set for a season at the Hexagon Theatre in Pietermaritzburg from 5 to 7 March 2015.

This follows the production’s highly successful debut run in Durban over the past festive season, when award-winning playwright-director Clinton Marius showcased actress Shona Johnson in his sizzling new comedy, scoring unanimous thumbs-ups from critics and public alike.

“Has you laughing from start to finish” wrote Latoya Newman in The Daily News, while The Mercury’s arts editor Billy Suter found the show “a crowd-pleasing winner, well worth seeing, a triumph for both Johnson and Marius.”

“Great writing, great performance, great theatre!” stated film producer Junaid Ahmed about this Copy Dog production. “Most awesomely humorous portrayal of my coloured peeps!” wrote theatre practitioner Pauline Dalais.

A raucous satire with a twist, B!*ch Stole My Doek pokes fun at a war of words between two women over a missing item of laundry. Colourful language and irrational hysteria offer an insider’s view of life in Durban’s southern suburb of Wentworth, as the comical battle between neighbours heats up and boils over, with unexpected results.

Pietermaritzburg born Clinton Marius has numerous books, stage and radio productions to his credit, including the hit radio comedy series, Lollipop Lane. His first foray into writing for young audiences, The Fantastical Flea Circus, scooped all awards in the Children's Category in the 2011 Mercury Durban Theatre Awards.

The following year Durban University of Technology (DUT) selected him as featured writer in their second annual Children's Theatre Festival, and staged five new plays, one of which, The Calf With No Name, is currently a school reader for Grade 8. “Having been born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, it is always a delight for me to bring my shows to my former home town,” says Marius. “Shona enchanted youngsters when she performed in my recent production of The Fantastical Flea Circus in the Catalina Theatre’s inaugural Children’s Theatre Festival in October 2014. Working with her inspired me to create a wicked comedy built around her special gifts as a comedienne.”

Shona Johnson graduated with the “Best Student in Drama Studies” award at DUT in 2008. In 2009, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts Honours degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal. As an actress, she has been nominated for four Mercury Durban Theatre Awards. She has appeared in ten productions on the professional stage. She currently teaches at the Helen O’ Grady Drama Academy, and runs her own company - AWEH! Theatre - which focuses on children’s theatre.

Performances of B!#ch Stole My Doek at the Hexagon Theatre from 5 to 7 March are at 8pm, with an additional 4.30pm matinee performance on 7 March to accommodate load shedding. Tickets are R100 per person (R80 students and pensioners).
