Dear Alumni and friends,

NOTICE OF THE DURBAN ALUMNI ASSOCIATION TALK BY DR ELSA POOLEY

Elsa Pooley grew up in Johannesburg, Harare and Pietermaritzburg. In 1965 she married conservationist and crocodile ecologist Tony Pooley. They had three sons, Simon, Justin and Thomas. She lived in game reserves of Zululand for 20 years making an extensive collection of the plants of the region, and publishing research papers on vegetation mapping and traditional plant use by local people. The family moved to Clansthal on the KZN South Coast and Elsa began work on her field guides.

Elsa was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2008. She won the prestigious Marloth Medal of the Botanical Society of South Africa (2004), and was awarded the Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Contribution to Botany by the SA Association of Botanists in 1999. She was the KZN Wildlife and Environment Society’s Conservationist of the Year in 1996.

Elsa will give an informative talk on “The practical use of South African plants for landscape gardening and rehabilitation – with the Durban beachfront as a prime example.” Since the 1930s, Casuarina trees have been used to control windblown sand damage on beachfront dunes. On the Durban beachfront, it has been demonstrated that relatively low growing, common sand dune plant species are very successful at controlling windblown sand, if used correctly. This is just one example of the application of practical knowledge of indigenous South African plants with horticultural requirements suited to our South African climate. Communicating with the construction industry, horticultural industry and the general public can lead to benefits for rehabilitation as well as attractive landscape gardening with great biodiversity.

Join us for what promises to be a most inspiring and informative evening with wine, juice, snacks and good company afterwards!
