The KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for TB-HIV (K-RITH) is a groundbreaking collaboration between the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Our mission is to conduct outstanding basic science research on tuberculosis (TB) and HIV, translate the scientific findings into new tools to control TB and HIV, and expand the educational opportunities in the region. K-RITH is an independent research institute that will work in collaboration with UKZN and other academic and clinical institutions in South Africa and around the world. The institute is housed in the K-RITH Tower Building; a state-of-the-art, 4,000 sq. m. research building on the campus of the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine of UKZN.
 
Overview of the position:
The K-RITH Laboratory Technician’s main responsibility is to work on various research projects that include working with strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the BSL3. He/She may perform flow cytometry, microbiology, molecular biology and other biochemistry techniques. This must be a dedicated individual who is self-motivated, caring and committed to service; excellence; and impeccable attention to detail.
 
Minimum qualifications:
1. Honours or Masters in one of the following (or related) disciplines: engineering, the physical sciences or the biological sciences
 
Experience required:
1. More than 3 years extensive laboratory experience
2. Prior experience in one or more of the following is an advantage:
a. Staining and culture of M.tuberculosis
b. Flow cytometry
c. Molecular biology
3. High level of computer literacy
 
Remuneration:
The remuneration package for this position is market related and will depend on the qualifications, experience, responsibility and previous earnings of the successful candidate.
