The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to present the UKZN Jazz Storytellers Ensemble on Wednesday 17 September 2014 at 18:00.

Every person, culture and event has a story. Storytelling predates writing and is a form of preserving key events. The UKZN Jazz Storytellers Ensemble tells the story of hope, peace and the beauty of diversity in South Africa through the eyes of these young 'born frees'.

 

The UKZN Storytellers who are a part of the third year of the VCU/UKZN "Jazz Bridge to Greater Understanding" community engagement project. The band is as follows: drummer Jude Ganasen. He describes his musical journey so far as an incredible experience;  Rogan Van de Burg on guitar, Bassist Dalisu Ndlazi who first got recognition for his bass skills around Durban while he was still in his school band at Umlazi Comtech. The three recently attended the Grahamstown National Arts Festival to represent UKZN.  The band will be completed by vocalist, Kwena Ramahuta from Lephalale in Limpopo and Lungelo Ngcobo on piano who in 2012 was a part of Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Band. He was also a part of the first group of the UKZN - VCU exchange program that same year. All the members of the ensemble are students in the jazz programme at UKZN and are active musician in the South African music scene. UKZN Jazz Storytellers are directed by Burton Naidoo.

The VCU team will again travel to Durban, South Africa during VCU's Spring Break in March 2015, where they will have collaborative concerts with the premiere of four commissioned works.

 

The listener can expect Traditional African poetry, Indian Rhythms, Free Jazz Improvisation, and loads of groove. The ensemble portrays the image of living in the beautiful coastal City of Durban, South Africa. Most of the music is original compositions by the students as well as compositions by Bheki Mseleku and Winston Ngozi.  Join us, at the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) Level 2, Shepstone Building, UKZN Howard College Campus on Wednesday 17 September 2014. In a manner of speaking yes. However you will not get the entire notice delivered to you in your email, instead you will get a daily digest which will list the subject of the notices, a short summary of each notice and hyperlinks that will take you to that notice on the web.

Anybody can access the notice system, however you will not be able to place notices from off-campus.
