VACANY: BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH ETHICS COMMITTEE

The UKZN Biomedical Research Ethics Committee (BREC) is based at the UKZN Research Office, Westville Campus.

There is currently one vacancy for a social scientist on BREC. This is an unpaid voluntary position.

Suitably qualified members of the university and/or community are invited to apply to serve as a volunteer member of BREC for a period of three years, renewable.

BREC meets monthly and there is a considerable workload of up to 1-4 hours per week between meetings. Rapid turnaround is required on all BREC work. Basic training in research ethics will be provided. Scheduled BREC meetings are mainly held at the Research Office of the Westville campus of UKZN. Postgraduate research opportunities in research ethics are possible.

ALL MEMBERS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF BIOMEDICAL AND HEALTH RELATED SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH.

The current vacancy requires a person with the following skills:

Health related social sciences, preferably with a completed PhD in a related field such as Psychology or Social Work.

BREC is registered as a Research Ethics Committee with the National Health Research Ethics Council of the SA Department of Health, and with the US Office for Human Research Protections. Will I still be able to read my Notices from within my email?

In a manner of speaking yes. However you will not get the entire notice delivered to you in your email, instead you will get a daily digest which will list the subject of the notices, a short summary of each notice and hyperlinks that will take you to that notice on the web.

2. Who has access to notices?


Anybody can access the notice system, however you will not be able to place notices from off-campus.
