Sandile is a lecturer at the School of Built Environment in the Housing Discipline. He holds a Masters degree in Housing from UKZN and he is currently pursuing his PhD at Stuttgart University. His PhD is concerned with informal housing markets in KZN. He is focusing on informal transactions in government subsidized low income housing in South Africa. His research interest covers human settlements, water provision, sanitation and peri-urban development. He has previously worked for Ethekwini Water and Sanitation, National Department Economic Development and has been running an NGO which he established in 2011. His teaching areas include housing policy, housing finance and housing implementation. The current project he is working on explores the implication of peri-urban development on water and sanitation provision. His research investigates the dynamics of these peri-urban developments in the context of indigent policy on water and sanitation provision. From a scholarly perspective, he uses Adams Mission and Umzinyathi to engage with postmodern peri-urbanism and whether this theory is compatible with contemporary dynamics in African cities.
