Which critiques of post-Apartheid rule - and which counter strategies - come next?

PRESENTERS:  Floyd Shivambu, Castro Ngobese, Louise Colvin and Patrick Bond
DATE: Friday, 25 April
TIME: 14h00 - 17h00
VENUE: Room L2, Memorial Tower Building, UKZN Howard College Campus

TOPIC:
“Ja, there is a revolution coming in South Africa. It will be a socialist revolution that will be led by all the progressive working class forces.” - Floyd Shivambu

The 20th anniversary of freedom on 27 April and the May 7 national election require from us a much more rigorous balance sheet of gains and defeats, and assessment of strategic options, than we have had to date. The recent arrival of two critical left-wing narratives - from the National Union of Metalworkers of SA and the Economic Freedom Fighters - gives the society much more to think about. Can a left political party now make a breakthrough; should progressives vote "No" with a spoiled ballot; is a United Front of civil society the most appropriate vehicle at present; what role for Marxist critique and the socialist vision; and are our society's other pathologies - e.g. patriarchy, homophobia, racism and xenophobia, eco-destruction, generational injustices, internecine violence - being adequately confronted?

SPEAKERS:
Floyd Shivambu
is head of policy for the Economic Freedom Fighters and was previously spokesperson for the ANC Youth League. He edited The Coming Revolution (Jacana 2014).
Castro Ngobese is Spokesperson for the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa.
Louise Colvin
is a former MK war veteran and Durban leader of the Vukani Sidikiwe 'Vote No' initiative.
Patrick Bond directs CCS and co-authored South Africa - The Present as History (Jacana, 2014).
