The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is proud to present, folk/Americana songstress, Jaspar Lepak On Tuesday April 22nd at 18:00

Lapek, is traveling all the way from her current home in Seattle, Washington, to debut her new album. Special Guests include Kale Lepak (accordion & harmonies) and Richard Haslop (mandolin & dobro).

No stranger to South Africa, Lepak lived in Durban with her husband Kale from 2009 to 2011. During that time, she performed on some of KZN’s premier stages including Splashy Fen, White Mountain Music Festival, and the Barnyard Theatre. She also recorded and released her sixth album Forgiving Wind which was hailed by Rolling Stone South Africa as an album full of "beauty and original charm.” Enlisting the help of talented Durban musicians to play the parts of banjo, mandolin, dobro, bass, and lead guitar, Forgiving Wind shimmers “like a brisk west wind rippling over the savannahs” (Duluth News Tribune). This April, Lepak returns to KZN to reunite with some of these wonderful musicians for three special shows, kicking it all off at UKZN’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music.

Bio: A child of Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, Lepak started writing songs just after university while living in Minneapolis. Between 2004 and 2009, she recorded five full length albums, and in the fall of 2009, she left Minneapolis for Durban, South Africa. Her music found an enthusiastic audience, and in 2011, she recorded her sixth original CD, Forgiving Wind. Best known for her bell-like voice and introspective storytelling, Lepak sings with “the kind of Americana, lullaby ghost of a voice that listeners search for in roots music” (Twin Cities A.V. Club). She became a Seattle resident in 2012 and tours frequently between her former homes and her new home in the Pacific Northwest. Her seventh album, Wide World will be released this April.

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) is at Level 2, Shepstone Building at UKZN Howard College Campus on Wednesday 22 April 2014. Doors open at 17:30 and music starts at 18:00. R40 adults, R20 Pensioners, R15 for students.
