Reminder: UKZN DAA Alumni Relations Talk by David Hulme: Monday, 2 October 2023
You are cordially invited to a talk by David Hulme titled: The “Granddaddy” - the Constitution of the United States of America

Talk Overview

The US Constitution, the world's oldest still-in-use written constitution, profoundly influenced modern liberal democracies, even those in the British sphere. It introduced the presidential system, drawing inspiration from the British Constitution while reflecting Enlightenment ideals. Unlike the British Constitution's gradual evolution, the US version was purposefully conceived, written, and enacted swiftly. It inherited features like representative government and separation of powers but added innovations like constitutional supremacy and stringent checks and balances. This constitution underpins arguably the most successful modern state, making it the "granddaddy" for many democratic systems worldwide.
