Webinar:
The Climate Justice Charter Response
to the Worsening Climate Crisis and South Africa’s Carbon Democracy
Speaker:
Vishwas Satgar
Date
& Time: Wednesday 3 March 2021, 16:00-17:00 SA Time
Topic
This webinar will
provide a background to the Climate Justice charter process and its approach to
climate justice. It will unpack the conception of deep just transition,
systemic alternatives, a people driven Climate Justice State and a Climate
Justice Deal for South Africa. Moreover, the importance of building a powerful
people led Climate Justice Movement will be discussed, not as a lobby group or
force for symbolic disruption, but rather as a movement constituting new forms
of power for transformative change from below. This will be anchored in an
overview of the current climate science which suggests Southern Africa is
heating at twice the global average. The implications this has for South
Africa’s climate future will be examined.
