The study of African politics has been affected by the westernization of knowledge. To wit: Europeans can be citizens of the world, Africans can only be foreigners or refugees. Theories for African experiences are to be formulated in the West and Africans should only deploy them. Democracy and liberalism is a Western export to the rest of the world. This thread affects the conception of Africa as a caricature of a Western ideal. In order to decolonize, African scholars will need to debunk the myths found in the westernization of knowledge – which is the focus of this seminar.
Speaker Bio:
Ajibola Adigun is a Mandela Rhodes scholar at UKZN. He had his Bachelor's degree in Politics and Philosophy at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. He has previously been a Smith Fellow at the Atlas Network Washington, DC and a Koch Associate at Strata Policy in Logan, Utah, USA. He is an alumnus of the Leadership Institute in Virginia, USA and has diplomas in political communication and Think-Tank management. He is a failed cosmopolitan and a successful Afropolitan.
