TOPIC: Julius Caesar, Mithridates of Pergamum and the Relief of Alexandria in 47 BC
ABSTRACT: Little note has been taken of this episode in the career of Caesar except for the well-publicized relationship with Cleopatra. However the backdrop to their love affair is a siege which, although relegated into the background, was arguably more important than amorous intrigues. Moreover this siege and its conclusion occurred over a period of six month during which time the outside world heard little from the man who was the ruler of the world. In this discussion chronology, climate and distance are analysed for the effect all three have on our understanding of this episode and indeed on the relationship between Caesar and the last Ptolemaic ruler of Egypt.
