The Opland Collection of Xhosa Literature – new from UKZN Press
UKZN Press has recently held 3 successful launches (Cape Town, Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth – all sold out) for the first two volumes in the Opland Collection of Xhosa Literature. Volume 1, William Wellinton Gqoba: Xhosa Histories and Poetry (1879-1888) edited and translated by Jeff Opland, Wandile Kuse and Pamela Maseko and D.L.P. Yali-Manisi: Historical Poems edited and translated by Jeff Opland and Pamela Maseko.
These books offer English translations as well as Xhosa texts (some of them previously unpublished) restoring this body of writing from the 18th century in South Africa to the public domain and making it accessible to a wider audience. It reflects the 'other side of frontier history' offering a salutary corrective to European attitudes to that history and challenges the conception of Xhosa literature as a 20th century phenomenon.
