CCS Seminar: "New Spaces of Social Activism" by Chris Coward

The Centre for Civil Society based within the School of Built Environment and Development studies invites you to the seminar New Spaces of Social Activism by Chris Coward.

Date: Wednesday, 28 January 2015
Time: 12h30 - 14h00
Venue: CCS Seminar Room 602, 6th Floor, MTB Tower, Howard College, UKZN

Topic:
Occupying new spaces of social activism reflects innovations in both physical and ether sites. These experiences, in many parts of a tumultuous world, are stimulating new ideas about public space, power and civil society practices. These are not merely sites of protest - as witnessed in so many urban struggles over social amenities and political economy since around 2011 - but also spaces characterised by new modes of social collaboration as well as ideas that disrupt outmoded power structures.

Speaker:
Chris Coward directs the Technology & Social Change Group at the University of Washington Information School, which pursues research projects in 50 countries. He focuses on information and communication technologies for international development. His current interests include ICTs for employment and entrepreneurship, innovation spaces, digital inclusion, and impact evaluation and measurement. Much of his work focuses on the role of public libraries and civil society organizations in these areas. He holds post-graduate degrees in Public Administration and International Studies, both from the University of Washington.
