Details of presentation by Doug Engelbrecht:

Student Evaluation of Teaching: the good, the bad and the ugly.  Doug Engelbrecht intends sharing his views on what some have called a pseudoscience, SET as a tool for instructor development, and his recommendations for instructors wary of SET.

Doug Engelbrecht is an incongruous member of staff at the School of Management, Information & Technology and Governance in the College of Law and Management Studies.  He wallows in the bowels of the list of academic staff, but has taught at the University, and others, for eighteen years.  Appointed to full time staff in 2009 he makes the laconic observation that the use of student evaluation data as a tool for performance management has distorted the alternative purpose of SET  as a tool for instructor development.  The precipitous emphasis by the Promotions Policies and Procedures of SET as a means to make personnel decisions obligates the need, he feels, to reflect upon the intentions, the method, and the premise upon which the validity and reliability of SET as quality assurance device is determined.

Our office aims to enhance Teaching and Learning on behalf of the College of Law and Management Studies.

Kind Regards

Dianne Muthen
