UKZN Staff, Students and Alumni Featured at Jam in Mzansi: Africa Day Jazz Celebration 31 May 2026

The University of KwaZulu-Natal proudly celebrates the participation of its students, staff, and alumni in the upcoming Jam in Mzansi: Africa Day Jazz Celebration, taking place on Sunday, 31 May 2026 at the Durban Botanic Gardens.


This exciting live jazz experience will showcase some of South Africa’s finest jazz talent and features several members of the UKZN music community, including:

Lindi Ngonelo – UKZN alumni, pianist, composer and arranger
Heels Over Head – acclaimed all-female jazz band featuring UKZN alumni Thulile Zama (founder and vocalist) and Nomfundo Chumbane (pianist)
• Thando Cele – current UKZN students, bassist, and vocalist Thando Cele .
UKZN Pop Voice Ensemble – current students from the UKZN Music Department


Presented by Sompisi Events in partnership with Durban Tourism, the festival celebrates African rhythms, heritage, creativity, and unity through an outstanding line-up of established and emerging jazz artists.

Come and support UKZN talent at this vibrant celebration of South African jazz and African musical excellence also.

 

Running from 12h00 – 19h00, the festival features an exceptional line-up of legendary and emerging jazz artists, including:

  • DHS Jazz Band led by Dr Natalie Rungan, The ensemble brings together Durban High school’s most talented instrumentalists to explore various styles of jazz.
  • Sheila da Bluenote – Renowned Durban vocalist known for her Afro-soul and blues sound, delivering powerful messages of love and unity.
  • Sbonelo Mlita – Afro-jazz and Afrobeat bassist, composer, and bandleader performing with his dynamic ensemble.
  • UKZN Ensemble – Rising stars from the University of KwaZulu-Natal School of Arts Music Department.
  • Lindi Ngonelo – Pianist, composer, and arranger presenting music from her acclaimed album In a Man’s World
  • Ernie Smith – Multi-award-winning South African artist celebrated for blending jazz, R&B, Afro, and gospel.
  • Heels Over Head – Acclaimed all-female jazz band known for their vibrant stage presence and contemporary jazz sound.
  • Jabulile Majola (Headliner) – A powerful and emotive storyteller whose music blends folk, poetry, and African influences.

From smooth jazz grooves to vibrant Afrocentric rhythms, Jam in Mzansi is more than a concert — it is an immersive celebration of African identity, creativity, and connection.
