The Discipline of Music in the School of Arts offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in four major streams: African Music and Dance, Jazz and Popular Music, Opera Studies and Western Classical Music. All modules involve practical components. 

We invite applications for a contract Lecturer position on the Howard College campus to teach in Semester 1, 2026 (February – June 2026). The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, primarily in, but not limited to,  the area of Music Technology, which is available as a specialisation in all streams, and to supplement teaching  in other parts of the music program. They would be expected to undertake consultations with students and contribute to the administrative tasks within the Discipline. All teaching will be done face-to-face.

 

Minimum Requirements:

·       A Master’s degree in Music

·       At least 2 years of successful teaching experience in the theory and practice of the Discipline.

·       The candidate should be able to prove a  knowledge of Music Technology, including Music  Production, Recording Engineering and Live Sound.

REMUNERATION: The remuneration package offered will be dependent on the qualifications of the successful applicant, in line with UKZN remuneration for ad hoc lecturer level. Rates of pay will be per University fixed-term rates and official module (Handbook) approved hours for these academic duties.
