The Discipline of Music in the School of Arts offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in four major streams: African Music and Dance, Jazz and Popular Music, Opera Studies and Western Classical Music. All modules involve practical components. 

The School of Arts seeks to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced academic to a 5-month contract lecturer position in the African Music and Dance (AMD) Programme. The successful candidate will be responsible for practical teaching, ensemble direction, choreography, performance training, concert production, and applied ethnomusicology components of the curriculum.

Minimum Requirements

·       Master’s degree in Ethnomusicology, African Music, Dance Studies, or a closely related field.

·       Demonstrated competence in both African music and dance performance (instrumental/vocal and dance/movement).

·       Experience teaching practical performance modules at the tertiary level.

·       Proven ability to direct ensembles, choreograph works, and facilitate performance-based assessments.

 

Key Responsibilities

·       Teach and direct practical African Music and Dance modules, including performance technique, choreography, and rehearsal processes.

·       Train and coordinate AMD ensembles, including musical direction, movement direction, and performance coaching.

·       Lead and manage concert production, public showcases, examinations, and practical assessments.

·       Teach contextual or theoretical components in AMD and Applied Ethnomusicology.

·       Participate in curriculum delivery, moderation, administration, and School activities.

·       Contribute to AMD’s community engagement and collaborative projects.

REMUNERATION: The remuneration package offered will be dependent on the qualifications of the successful applicant, in line with UKZN remuneration for ad hoc lecturer level. Rates of pay will be per the University fixed-term rates, and official module (Handbook) approved hours for these academic duties.
