AMD Lunch Hour Concert, 27th October, 2025 Celebrating the Life of a Poet Laureate
UKZN's African Music Project is
thrilled to present the best of its ensembles for the end-of-semester Lunch
Hour Concert. The concert celebrates Prof. Mazisi Kunene's legacy as South
Africa's first Poet Laureate narrated through storytelling, music, and dance.
The concert highlights how Kunene contributed to preserving Zulu culture and
language, with performers presenting Maskandi with Umzansi and
Gumboot dances. It is a 'never to be missed' nostalgic yet vibrant mid-day
Monday!
We use amaZulu dances to symbolise Prof.
Mazisi Kunene's deep-rootedness in culture. We sing as we rejoice, appreciating
his role in preserving our heritage through poetry. We stomp, slap, and clap
our gumboots as a rhythmic code to communicate and remember how he served as an
anti-apartheid activist during the dark days.
The AMD Ensembles are directed by Thabiso Zondo (AMD Foundation –
Umzansi Dance), Mfundiseni Ndwalane (AMD1 – Storytelling/Production), Nozuko
Nguqu (Maskanda Dance), Ernest Zondi (Gumboot Dance)
Tell your friends to invite their
friends to come along, because this will be an unforgettable experience.
Remember, this is a free lunch concert, so come early to avoid disappointment,
as the seats are limited.
