AREC APPROVAL REQUIRED FOR RESEARCH ON ALL ANIMAL GROUPS
Dear Staff and Students
The
SOUTH AFRICAN
NATIONAL STANDARD for animal research has been updated to the current version
(SANS10386:2021) and provides guidelines
for the care
and use of animals for scientific purposes.
Section 1.3 of SANS10386:2021 reads as follows:
“It covers all live
non-human vertebrates and higher invertebrates such as the Cephalopoda and Decapoda. It also covers embryos, fetuses and larval forms and
their treatment in a humane manner once they have progressed beyond half the
gestation or incubation period of the relevant species, or they become capable
of independent feeding, whichever comes first.
NOTE
1 The researchers should submit
proposals to use all invertebrates for consideration by the AECs. “
Research on all animal groups
(including all invertebrate groups) as stated by the SANS10386:2021, section
1.3, including Note 1, will require UKZN AREC approval from 1 January 2025
onwards.
