Adjustment to the learning environment by students that are Deaf or hard of hearing attending UKZN

Invitation to Participate in an Audiology Research project

Study title: Adjustment to the Learning environment by students that are Deaf or hard of hearing attending the University of KwaZulu-Natal

We are fourth-year Audiology students at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) conducting a study on how students who are d/Deaf or hard of hearing adjust to the learning environment at our university. This includes the educational, environmental, physical, psychosocial and cultural factors. Our study would like to include participants from Howard College, Edgewood, Pietermaritzburg (PMB), and Westville campuses of UKZN. The study has received permission from the Registrar of the university and ethical clearance (HSSREC: 00006751/2024). We are also consulting with the Disability Support Unit.

If you are between 18 and 35 years old, enrolled as a full-time or part-time student at UKZN, and diagnosed as d/Deaf or Hard of Hearing (HoH), we invite you to participate. This includes undergraduate, postgraduate, or doctoral students including students using hearing aids, cochlear implants, other assistive listening devices or are Sign Language Users.

The study will be undertaken at a venue at your respective campuses and at a time that is convenient. A Sign Language Interpreter will also be made available to students who require the service. The study will be undertaken from mid July- end of August 2024.

Before participating, you will receive an information document and consent form to sign. Participation involves a 45-minute interview session. As a token of appreciation, each participant will receive a meal voucher worth R35.

This research is conducted by Kayla Percival, Mahanoor Ahmed, Philasande Shange, and Nomthandazo Mofokeng under the supervision of Ms. Nasim Khan. Your participation is invaluable, and we guarantee the confidentiality and anonymity of all responses. Participation is entirely voluntary, and opting out will not result in any consequences.

Thank you for considering this opportunity.

Your contribution is greatly appreciated.

Warm regards,
