PhD study: Learning and teaching anatomy in a blended learning medical curriculum
Dear students,
My name is Carole Ngoie. I am a PhD
candidate from the program of Clinical Anatomy, School of Laboratory Medicine
and Medical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal
(UKZN).
You are
cordially invited to consider taking part in this study that intends to
investigate the relationship between the learning preferences of medical
students and how anatomical concepts are taught, learned, and used in a
blended learning curriculum. Anatomy is the foundation of medicine, yet
students find it difficult to learn. Understanding anatomy helps turn
theoretical knowledge into safer practical skills. Students learn and interact
differently due to their learning styles. Students learn better when they are
aware of their learning preferences and when teaching methods support these
preferences. This
study therefore aims to explore the relationship between medical students'
learning preferences within a blended learning curriculum and the impact
of anatomical teaching on learning and knowledge application
in clinical practice at the UKZN.
This study has been ethically
reviewed and approved by the UKZN Biomedical research Ethics Committee
(approval number BREC/ 00003901/2022). This study is supervised by Dr. C.O. Rennie, UKZN, Department of
Clinical Anatomy, and Co-supervised by Prof J.M. Van Wyk, UCT, Department of
Clinical and Professional Practice, School of Clinical Medicine, and Dr. R.
Abraham, UKZN, Department School of Clinical Medicine.
The study will involve
self-completion of two questionnaires on the methods and styles for learning
anatomy by medical students. Your participation is expected to take 10–15
minutes per questionnaire.

I am looking forward to hearing
from you.
Thank you,
Carole Ngoie
